When these cookies bake, the smell of butter and vanilla fills the whole kitchen, and that’s when you know something special is coming out of the oven.

The edges turn just slightly golden while the centers stay soft and tender. Once cooled, they’re the perfect balance of buttery and sweet, with that burst of cherry pie filling in the middle. Every bite feels like comfort — familiar and nostalgic, yet always exciting to eat again.

I love making a big batch of these and keeping them on the counter in a glass jar — they don’t last long! They’re the kind of cookies people reach for again and again, especially around the holidays. They also make such a thoughtful homemade gift. A plate of cherry thumbprint cookies wrapped in clear cellophane with a red ribbon is simple but looks so beautiful and heartfelt.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup cherry pie filling (you’ll use about one cherry per cookie)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Make the dough:
In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and vanilla, mixing until smooth. Stir in the flour and salt until the dough comes together.
  3. Shape the cookies:
Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet. Use your thumb or the back of a small measuring spoon to make an indentation in the center of each cookie.
  4. Add the filling:
Spoon a small amount of cherry pie filling into each indentation — just enough to hold one cherry and a bit of filling.
  5. Bake:
Bake for 12–14 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden. Let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Jennie’s Thoughts:

There’s something about cherry thumbprint cookies that always makes me smile. They’re simple, nostalgic, and just beautiful on a cookie platter. The cherry pie filling gives them that glossy, ruby-red center that looks like something straight out of a bakery.

Baking Tips:

If you want a little extra sweetness, you can drizzle a simple vanilla glaze over the cooled cookies or dust them lightly with powdered sugar.

For a sparkling touch, roll the dough balls in sugar before baking. And if you’re baking ahead, these cookies freeze perfectly — just store them in an airtight container, separated by layers of parchment paper.

A Few More Thoughts:

These Cherry Thumbprint Cookies are one of those recipes that never go out of style. They’re pretty enough for gift boxes and cookie swaps, but easy enough to make on a cozy afternoon.

They also pair beautifully with coffee or hot chocolate, making them perfect for a quiet moment of sweetness. Every bite feels like a little celebration of home baking at its best.
