Why You’ll Love These Apple Pie Rice Krispie Treats

This recipe takes a basic Rice Krispie treat and turns it into a really easy apple dessert. You still get the buttery marshmallow flavor and crispy texture of the original, but every bite has sweet apples and cinnamon on top.

And just like my favorite homemade Rice Krispie treats, I add a little vanilla to the melted butter and marshmallows. It gives the cereal layer a richer homemade flavor that works perfectly with the apple topping.

Ingredients

For the Rice Krispie Treats

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 package (10 ounces) mini marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Apple Pie Topping

  • 1 can (21 ounces) apple pie filling
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional

How to Make Apple Pie Rice Krispie Treats

Step 1: Lightly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Melt the butter in a large pot over low heat.

Step 3: Add the mini marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.

Step 4: Stir the vanilla extract into the melted marshmallow mixture.

Step 5: Remove the pot from the heat and add the Rice Krispies cereal. Gently fold everything together until the cereal is completely coated.

Step 6: Transfer the mixture to your prepared pan. Gently press it into an even layer without packing it down too tightly.

Step 7: Allow the Rice Krispie treats to cool and set.

Step 8: Spoon the apple pie filling over the top of the Rice Krispie treats and gently spread it into an even layer. If desired, sprinkle a little additional cinnamon over the apples.

Cut into squares and serve.

An Easy Fall Rice Krispie Treat

The apple pie filling is what makes this recipe so easy. There’s no peeling, coring, or cooking apples. Just open the can and spoon those cinnamon-coated apples right over your homemade Rice Krispie treats.

If the apple slices in your pie filling are particularly large, you can roughly chop them before spreading the filling over the treats. Smaller apple pieces make the bars much easier to cut and eat.

A Little Extra Apple Pie Flavor

For even more apple pie flavor, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon to the butter and marshmallow mixture along with the vanilla.

You could also drizzle a little caramel sauce over the apple pie filling just before serving for caramel apple Rice Krispie treats.

Storage

Because these Rice Krispie treats are topped with apple pie filling, they’re best stored covered in the refrigerator rather than at room temperature.

The apple filling will gradually soften the cereal layer, so these are best enjoyed shortly after adding the topping. If you’re making them ahead, prepare the Rice Krispie treat layer first and add the apple pie filling closer to serving time.
