Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Red and green gel food coloring
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- In a separate large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until a dough forms.
- Divide and Color the Dough:
- Divide the dough into three equal parts. Leave one part plain for the white dough.
- Add red food coloring to the second part and green food coloring to the third part. Knead the dough until the colors are evenly distributed.
- Wrap each dough in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
- Form the Striped Dough:
- Roll out the white and red dough separately to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut each into long, even strips.
- Alternately layer the red and white strips together to create a candy cane stripe effect. Gently press them together to seal.
- Roll this layered dough slightly to smooth the stripes and even the surface.
- Create the Cutouts:
- Using a round cookie cutter, cut circles from the striped dough. Then, use a smaller Christmas tree shaped cutter to cut out the center of each striped cookie.
- Roll out the green dough and use a mini Christmas tree cutter to cut small trees.
- Place a green Christmas tree cutout in the center of each round striped cookie, filling the space.
- Bake the Cookies:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Place the cookies on the prepared sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack.
