There’s nothing quite like a batch of warm homemade garlic knots fresh out of the oven. Golden, soft, and dripping with garlic butter, these are the kind of rolls that disappear the second they hit the table.

What makes this recipe extra special is the homemade dough — soft, pillowy, and baked to perfection — and the garlic butter glaze that soaks into every twist and turn. A sprinkle of parmesan cheese takes them over the top, giving each knot a savory, cheesy finish that’s completely irresistible.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Garlic Butter:

  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Let rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Shape the knots: Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope, then tie it into a simple knot.
  5. Bake: Place knots on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  6. Make the garlic butter: While the knots bake, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in parsley.
  7. Coat the knots: When the knots come out of the oven, immediately brush them generously with garlic butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Jennie’s Notes

I like to make extra garlic butter and drench the knots twice — once right out of the oven, and again just before serving for that glossy, buttery finish. The more garlic butter, the better!

You can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight — just bring it to room temperature before shaping.

These knots also reheat beautifully in the oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes.

For a spicy kick, sprinkle a little crushed red pepper or Italian seasoning over the top before serving.

Store leftovers (if there are any!) in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. To reheat, warm in the oven for a few minutes and brush with a touch more melted butter.
