One of the reasons this dish works so well is the balance of flavors and textures. The crisp-tender green beans provide a fresh and vibrant base, while the bacon adds a delightful crunch and a burst of umami. The caramelized onions tie everything together with a subtle sweetness that complements the savory elements of the dish. It’s easy to make, requires minimal ingredients, and will quickly become a holiday favorite for both you and your guests.

What makes this recipe stand out is its simplicity. With only a few key ingredients, you can create a side dish that feels special without needing a ton of prep time. Green beans are already a Thanksgiving favorite, but adding bacon and onion gives them a flavorful upgrade that makes them extra satisfying.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cans of green beans
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup of chopped bacon
  • 1 tsp Lawry’s total seasoning

After you’ve cooked your sausage and added it to the stuffing, remove the fat from the skillet with paper towels, and add 3 cans of cut green beans, including the liquid from the cans.  Turn the heat to high to bring the green beans to a rolling boil.  Add 1/4 cup of fresh chopped onion, and sprinkle with Lawry’s Total Seasoning, stir well and continue to boil for 3 minutes.  Turn the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.  Remove from skillet to a bowl, and top with cooked crumbled bacon.  Serve and enjoy!

Note:  when you remove the sausage fat from the skillet, simply soak up the fat with the paper towels, and discard.  The skillet will probably have remnants of the sausage stuck in the bottom, and that’s fine, because when you add the green beans, the liquid will help loosen the pan bits, and this is known as deglazing the pan, which will give the green beans a wonderful flavor.

Also:  you can use precooked packaged bacon pieces to top.  Hormel makes several choices, and one package is plenty to top the green beans.  Or, if you have cooked bacon leftover from breakfast, that will work too.

If you’re making these green beans as a side dish and you’re not making the sausage stuffing, just add a few pieces of crumbled bacon to the pan you’re cooking the green beans in and follow the directions for the rest of the recipe.
