Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There’s something about cinnamon and sugar that instantly makes a recipe feel cozy. In this hot chocolate, the cinnamon helps balance the sweetness of the white chocolate while vanilla gives it that soft, bakery-style flavor.

Even better, it takes only about 10 minutes to make on the stovetop.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream, for topping

  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

How to Make Snickerdoodle White Hot Chocolate

1. Make the Cinnamon Sugar

In a small bowl, stir together the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Set it aside while you prepare the hot chocolate.

You can use this mixture to sprinkle over the whipped cream or even use it to create a cinnamon-sugar rim around the mug.

2. Heat the Milk and Cream

Add the whole milk and heavy cream to a medium saucepan.

Heat over medium-low heat until the mixture is hot and steaming. Don’t let it come to a full boil.

3. Melt the White Chocolate

Add the white chocolate chips to the warm milk mixture.

Whisk continuously until the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is creamy and smooth.

4. Add the Snickerdoodle Flavor

Whisk in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and a small pinch of salt.

Continue heating for another minute or two so the cinnamon flavor has a chance to blend into the hot chocolate.

5. Add the Toppings

Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top each one with a generous swirl of whipped cream.

Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top and add a snickerdoodle cookie to the side of the mug.

Serve immediately.

Jennie’s Thoughts

I wanted this hot chocolate to actually taste like a snickerdoodle instead of simply tasting like white hot chocolate with cinnamon sprinkled on top. The combination of cinnamon, vanilla, and white chocolate gives it that sweet bakery flavor that reminds me of a freshly baked cookie.

The cinnamon-sugar topping is my favorite part. I like adding it right over the whipped cream so you get a little cinnamon sugar in every sip.

And if you have snickerdoodle cookies around, definitely serve one with each mug. Dipping the cookie into the warm white hot chocolate makes this feel like a full dessert rather than just a drink.

How to Make a Cinnamon Sugar Rim

A cinnamon-sugar rim makes this hot chocolate especially pretty for parties.

Mix the cinnamon and sugar together on a small plate. Lightly wet the rim of your mug with milk or brush it with a tiny amount of melted white chocolate.

Dip the rim into the cinnamon sugar, turning the mug until it’s evenly coated.

If you’re using melted white chocolate, let it set for a few minutes before pouring in the hot chocolate.

Can I Make It Without Heavy Cream?

Yes. Replace the heavy cream with another 1/2 cup of milk.

Whole milk gives you the creamiest result, but 2% milk will also work. You can also substitute half-and-half for the milk and heavy cream if that’s what you have available.

Can I Use a White Chocolate Bar?

Absolutely. In fact, a good-quality white chocolate bar can melt even more smoothly than some white chocolate chips.

Chop the chocolate into small pieces before adding it to the warm milk so it melts quickly and evenly.

You’ll need approximately 3 to 4 ounces of chopped white chocolate.

Make It Extra Snickerdoodle-Flavored

For an even stronger snickerdoodle flavor, add a very small pinch of nutmeg along with the cinnamon.

You can also add a drop of butter extract if you have it. It gives the drink an extra bakery-like flavor reminiscent of buttery cookies. A little goes a long way, so start with just a drop or two.

Storage

Store leftover hot chocolate in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Reheat it gently on the stovetop over low heat, whisking frequently. You can also microwave individual servings in 30-second intervals.

If it becomes too thick after refrigeration, simply stir in a splash of milk.

Recipe Tips

  • Use low heat. White chocolate can scorch, so don’t rush the heating process.
  • Whisk well. Cinnamon naturally wants to float, so whisking helps distribute it throughout the drink.
  • Don’t skip the salt. A tiny pinch helps balance the sweetness of the white chocolate.
  • Taste before serving. If you want more cinnamon flavor, whisk in another small pinch.
  • Add toppings right before serving. This keeps the whipped cream fluffy and the cinnamon sugar pretty.
