This recipe feels special enough for Christmas morning or a holiday brunch, but it’s simple enough to make on a regular weekend too. I like to serve mine with warm maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, or even a spoonful of cranberry sauce on top for extra holiday flair. Sometimes, I’ll add a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of orange zest to make them look even more festive on the plate.

Waffles are one of those recipes that feel homemade and comforting without requiring too much effort. With just a handful of pantry staples, some fresh or frozen cranberries, and an orange, you can whip up a breakfast that looks like it came straight from a bed-and-breakfast. If you’ve made my Strawberry Bundt Cake or Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes, you already know how simple ingredients can come together into something so comforting and delicious. These waffles are exactly that kind of recipe.

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the waffle iron
Turn on your waffle maker so it’s hot and ready by the time your batter is prepared.

Step 2: Mix dry ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3: Mix wet ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, then add the milk, melted butter, vanilla, and orange zest. Stir until smooth.

Step 4: Combine
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and gently stir until just combined. The batter should still have a few lumps. Fold in the chopped cranberries.

Step 5: Cook the waffles
Grease your waffle iron with nonstick spray and pour in batter according to the size of your waffle maker. Cook until golden brown and crisp.

Step 6: Serve
Top with powdered sugar, maple syrup, cranberry sauce, or even a drizzle of white chocolate for a holiday-ready breakfast.

Tips & Variations

  • Using dried cranberries? Soak them in orange juice or warm water for 10 minutes to make them plump and juicy before folding into the batter.
  • Boost the orange flavor: Add a tablespoon of orange juice to the wet ingredients for even more citrus.
  • Make ahead: Cook the waffles, let them cool, then freeze in a single layer. Reheat in the toaster or oven for a quick breakfast.
  • Festive topping idea: A dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of orange zest make these waffles feel extra special for holiday brunch.
