Ingredients

  • 10–12 apples (a mix of sweet and tart works best)
  • 1 orange, quartered (optional but delicious)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice berries (or ground)
  • Water (enough to cover)
  • Brown sugar or honey, to taste (optional)

How to Make Homemade Apple Cider

  1. Wash the apples and roughly chop them, leaving the skins on. Remove seeds if desired.
  2. Place apples, orange, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice into a large pot or slow cooker.
  3. Add enough water to fully cover the fruit.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 2 hours.
(If using a slow cooker, cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours.)
  5. Mash the apples gently with a potato masher to release more flavor.
  6. Simmer an additional 30–60 minutes.
  7. Strain the cider through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  8. Sweeten to taste with brown sugar or honey, if needed. Serve warm or chilled.
