Instructions:

  1. Prepare the pie crust:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
    • Add the Crisco to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter to cut the Crisco into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • In a measuring cup, break 1 egg and stir with a fork until egg is light lemon color.  Add the Vinegar, and fill the cup with Water, up to the 1 cup measure, and stir to combine. Add the Egg/water mixture to the Flour mixture, mixing until the dough comes together and forms a ball. (I used my hands to mix the dough, and form into a ball).
    • Divide the dough into thirds, and roll out 1/3 of the dough to fit your pie plate.  Place the dough in the pie plate, allowing the dough to hang over the edges.  Pinch the dough around the edge of the pie plate, sealing the bottom crust.  Trim off excess dough with kitchen scissors, or a sharp knife.  Set aside.
  2. Prepare the apple filling:
    • In a large bowl, add the Pie Filling, and add the Sugar, Brown Sugar, Flour, Cinnamon, and stir to combine.  Pour the Pie Filling into the bottom crust, and place the small pieces of Butter on top.
  3. Prepare the pie and top crust:
    • Roll out another 1/3 of the pie crust.
  4. Cut the lattice strips:
    • Using a pastry wheel or a sharp knife, cut the rolled-out dough into strips approximately 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide.
  5. Create the lattice pattern:
    • Lay half of the strips across the pie in parallel lines, spacing them about 1/2 to 3/4 inches apart.
    • Fold back every other strip (1st, 3rd, 5th, etc.) halfway across the pie.
    • Lay one of the remaining strips perpendicular to the strips already in place, in the center of the pie.
    • Unfold the folded strips back over the newly laid strip.
    • Fold back the alternate strips (2nd, 4th, 6th, etc.) and lay another perpendicular strip.
    • Continue this process, alternating the folds and laying down perpendicular strips, until you’ve completed the lattice pattern across the whole pie.
  6. Trim and seal the edges:
    • Once the lattice pattern is complete, trim any excess dough from the edges of the pie.Press the edges of the pie to seal the top and bottom crusts together. You can use your fingers or a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch.
  7. BAKE THE PIE: place the pie in a preheated 425 degree oven for 15 minutes. Make sure the pie is in the center of the oven.   At the 15 minute mark.  Turn the oven to 350 degrees, and open the oven door, and check the pie.  Set another timer for 45 minutes, and bake the pie at 350 degrees for the 45 minutes.  At 20 minutes, brush the pie with Butter using a pastry brush, and sprinkle lightly with sugar.  at about the 30 minute mark, check the pie; if the crust is golden brown, loosely cover the pie with foil, using a big enough piece of foil to tent the pie, so the foil is not sitting on the pie.  (I pull off a large piece of foil, fold it in half, so it had a crease in it, and pinch it together at the crease, so it sits up off the pie, and resembles a tent, hence tenting the pie).  This will allow the pie to bake, but keep the crust from burning.
  8. REMOVE THE PIE:  When the 45 minute timer is up, remove the pie from the oven, and place on a cooling rack to cool to room temperature.  This will take about 3 hours.  When the pie is cool, slice into 2 inch pieces, and serve with Ice Cream, or Whipped cream.  Enjoy
