- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pink gel food coloring
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
2. Tint the Dough:
- Divide the dough into two equal portions.
- Leave one half plain (vanilla) and add a few drops of pink gel food coloring to the other half. Mix until the color is evenly distributed.
3. Chill the Dough:
- Wrap each dough portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until firm enough to roll out.
4. Roll Out and Cut:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out each portion of dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼-inch thickness.
- Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes from both the pink and vanilla doughs.
5. Create Two-Tone Hearts:
- Use a knife to cut each heart cookie in half vertically.
- Pair one pink half with one vanilla half, pressing the seams gently to form a two-tone heart.
6. Bake:
- Transfer the assembled cookies to the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
