How to Make Reindeer Sugar Cookies
Step 1: Make the Sugar Cookie Dough
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the egg and vanilla extract and mix until smooth.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.
The dough should be smooth and easy to handle without being overly sticky.
Step 2: Chill the Dough
Divide the dough into two portions and flatten each into a disk.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for approximately 1 hour.
Chilling the dough helps the cookies hold their shape while baking and makes them easier to cut.
Step 3: Cut Out the Reindeer Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled cookie dough to approximately 1/4-inch thickness.
Using a reindeer-shaped cookie cutter, cut out the cookies and carefully transfer them to the prepared baking sheets.
Gather the remaining dough, gently reroll, and continue cutting until all the dough has been used.
If the dough becomes too soft, refrigerate the cut cookies for 10–15 minutes before baking.
Step 4: Bake the Sugar Cookies
Bake at 350°F for approximately 8–10 minutes, or until the cookies are set and the edges are just beginning to turn lightly golden.
Avoid overbaking, as you want the cookies to remain tender with a beautiful light golden color.
Remove from the oven and allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for approximately 5 minutes.
Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely before decorating.
Step 5: Prepare the Cookie Icing
In a medium mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, light corn syrup, vanilla extract, and 3 tablespoons of milk or water.
Stir until smooth, adding additional liquid a few drops at a time until the icing reaches a thick piping consistency.
The icing should be smooth enough to pipe but thick enough to hold its shape.
Divide the icing into two bowls.
Tint one portion brown using brown gel food coloring.
Tint the second portion black using black gel food coloring.
Transfer each color into a separate piping bag fitted with a small round tip.
Step 6: Pipe the Brown Reindeer Antlers
Using the brown icing, carefully pipe the antlers onto the upper portion of each reindeer cookie.
Start by piping the main antler lines, then add smaller branches extending outward.
The brown icing creates a beautiful contrast against the light golden sugar cookies.
Allow the antlers to set slightly before continuing.
Step 7: Add the Black Icing Eyes and Smiles
Using the black icing, pipe two small round eyes onto each reindeer face.
Next, pipe a little curved smile underneath the nose area.
Keep the faces simple and sweet for that adorable Rudolph look.
Step 8: Add the Red Hot Candy Noses
Place a tiny dot of icing in the center of each reindeer’s face, just below the eyes.
Gently press a red hot candy into the icing to create the bright red nose.
Hold the candy in place for a moment so it adheres securely.
Repeat with the remaining cookies.
Step 9: Let the Cookies Dry
Arrange the decorated cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet or wire rack.
Allow the icing to dry completely before stacking or packaging.
Depending on the icing consistency and humidity, this may take several hours.
Once the icing is firm, your Reindeer Sugar Cookies are ready to serve!

How to Decorate Reindeer Sugar Cookies
One of my favorite things about these cookies is how simple the decorating is.
You don’t need to flood the cookies with royal icing or spend hours creating complicated designs.
The natural color of the baked sugar cookies already looks perfect for the reindeer’s face.
All you need are three simple decorating details.
Brown Icing Antlers
Use brown cookie icing to pipe the antlers onto the top of each cookie.
I like making little branching antlers so they look like real reindeer antlers.
You don’t have to make every antler identical. Each cookie can have its own personality!
Black Icing Eyes and Smiles
Pipe two little black eyes and a curved smile on each reindeer.
These simple details give the cookies the sweetest expressions.
Red Hot Candy Noses
The bright red candy noses are what really make these cookies special!
A little red hot candy is the perfect size for Rudolph’s nose and adds a beautiful pop of Christmas red against the golden cookie.
You can also use small red candy-coated chocolates if you prefer a milder candy flavor.

Tips for the Best Reindeer Sugar Cookies
Use chilled cookie dough. Chilled dough is easier to cut and helps the cookies keep their shape during baking.
Don’t roll the dough too thin. About 1/4 inch thick creates a sturdy cookie that’s easy to decorate.
Let the cookies cool completely. Warm cookies can cause the icing to melt or spread.
Use thick icing for the antlers. The brown icing should be thick enough to hold the antler details.
Keep the faces simple. Little round eyes and curved smiles are all you need to create adorable reindeer.
Attach the candy noses with icing. A tiny dot of icing helps hold the red hot candies securely.
Allow plenty of drying time. Make sure the icing is completely set before stacking or packaging the cookies.
Can I Use Store-Bought Sugar Cookie Dough?
Yes! If you’re short on time, you can use a refrigerated sugar cookie dough that’s suitable for rolling and cutting.
However, I really love using homemade cutout sugar cookie dough because it holds its shape beautifully and has that wonderful buttery flavor.
For the best results, choose a dough specifically intended for cutout cookies rather than a soft drop-cookie dough.

Can I Use Royal Icing?
Absolutely!
If you prefer decorating with royal icing, you can use your favorite royal icing recipe for the brown antlers and black facial details.
A medium-to-stiff piping consistency works well for the antlers, while a slightly softer piping consistency is perfect for the eyes and smiles.
You can also use premade cookie decorating icing if you want to make the process even easier.
Perfect for Christmas Cookie Trays
These Reindeer Sugar Cookies are such a fun addition to homemade Christmas cookie trays.
Their sweet little faces and bright red noses make them stand out among traditional holiday cookies.
Try arranging them with:
- Decorated Christmas tree cookies
- Snowman sugar cookies
- Classic chocolate chip cookies
- Gingerbread cookies
- Candy cane cookies
- Christmas sprinkle cookies
They’re also adorable packaged in clear cellophane bags with Christmas ribbon.

How to Store Reindeer Sugar Cookies
Once the icing has completely dried, store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
Place parchment paper between layers to protect the decorated faces and antlers.
You can also freeze the undecorated sugar cookies for up to 3 months.
Thaw completely before decorating.
Can I Make These Cookies Ahead of Time?
Yes!
You can prepare the sugar cookie dough up to 2 days ahead and store it tightly wrapped in the refrigerator.
You can also bake the cookies a day or two before decorating.
This makes them a great option for Christmas parties and holiday cookie exchanges because you can spread the preparation over several days.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of cookie cutter do I need?
A reindeer-shaped cookie cutter with room for the antlers and face works best. Choose a shape with a rounded face and two antler sections at the top.
What can I use for the red nose?
Red hot candies are perfect for creating Rudolph’s bright red nose. Small red candy-coated chocolates are another great option.
Do I need to frost the entire cookie?
No! The natural golden sugar cookie makes the perfect reindeer face, so you only need icing for the antlers, eyes, and smile.
Can kids help decorate these cookies?
Definitely! Children will love adding the eyes, smiles, and red candy noses. Younger children may need help with the more detailed antler piping.
Can I make these cookies without royal icing?
Yes! A simple powdered sugar cookie icing works beautifully. You can also use premade decorating icing for convenience.
