Why You’ll Love These Candy Apple Jell-O Shots

Candy apples are one of those flavors that instantly feel like fall. These Jell-O shots take that classic combination of tart green apple and sweet candy coating and turn it into a fun adults-only treat.

They’re easy to make ahead, easy to serve, and the vivid red color looks amazing on a party tray.

The green apple garnish is especially important here. Not only does it add fresh apple flavor, but the bright green against the red Jell-O makes it obvious that these are Candy Apple Jell-O Shots rather than ordinary cherry shots.

Candy Apple Jell-O Shots Recipe

Servings: 16–18 Jell-O shots
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Chill Time: 4 hours
Total Time: 4 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 (3-ounce) box cherry Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup sour apple schnapps
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • Thin slices of Granny Smith apple, for garnish
  • Fresh lemon juice, for the apple slices

Instructions

Place the cherry Jell-O powder in a medium heat-safe mixing bowl.

Pour 1 cup boiling water over the gelatin.

Whisk for approximately 2 minutes, or until the Jell-O has completely dissolved.

Allow the mixture to cool for several minutes.

Stir in the sour apple schnapps and vodka until well combined.

Arrange 2-ounce plastic shot cups on a baking sheet or tray.

Carefully pour the Jell-O mixture into the cups, filling each about 3/4 full.

Transfer the tray to the refrigerator and chill for at least 4 hours, or until completely set.

When you’re ready to serve the Jell-O shots, cut a Granny Smith apple into very thin slices.

Lightly coat the apple slices with fresh lemon juice to help prevent browning.

Place one small green apple slice into or along the edge of each bright red Jell-O shot.

Serve chilled.

What Do Candy Apple Jell-O Shots Taste Like?

These shots combine sweet red fruit flavor with tart green apple, creating a flavor reminiscent of a bright red candy apple.

Cherry gelatin gives the shots their vibrant candy-red appearance and sweetness, while sour apple schnapps brings in the tart apple flavor.

Vodka adds the boozy kick without overpowering the candy apple flavor.

What Kind of Apple Should I Use?

Granny Smith apples are my first choice.

Their vivid green skin looks beautiful against the bright red Jell-O, and their tart flavor helps balance the sweetness of the shots.

Slice the apple very thinly so the garnish isn’t too large for the shot cup.

How Do I Keep the Apple Slices From Turning Brown?

Cut the apple slices shortly before serving and lightly toss or brush them with fresh lemon juice.

You can prepare the actual Jell-O shots ahead of time, but I would not add the apple garnish until you’re ready to serve them.

That way, the apples remain crisp and bright green.

Can I Make Candy Apple Jell-O Shots Ahead of Time?

Yes! These are an excellent make-ahead Halloween or fall party recipe.

Prepare the Jell-O shots the night before and store them covered in the refrigerator.

Add the fresh green apple slices immediately before serving.

Can I Make Them More Sour?

Absolutely.

For a stronger tart green apple flavor, use a little more sour apple schnapps and slightly less vodka while keeping the total amount of alcohol the same.

You can also garnish the shots with an especially tart Granny Smith apple.

Tips for Perfect Jell-O Shots

Make sure the gelatin is completely dissolved before adding the alcohol.

Allow the boiling Jell-O mixture to cool slightly before stirring in the vodka and apple schnapps.

Don’t add extra alcohol beyond the recipe just to make the shots stronger. Too much alcohol can interfere with the gelatin setting properly.

And place your empty shot cups on a tray before you fill them. It makes transferring them to the refrigerator much easier.

How to Serve Candy Apple Jell-O Shots

Serve these shots very cold with their green apple garnish added just before serving.

For a fall party, arrange the bright red shots together on a large white or wooden serving tray with a few whole Granny Smith apples scattered around them.

The combination of glossy candy-red Jell-O and vivid green apple slices makes these especially fun for Halloween. You could even serve them alongside caramel apple treats for an entire apple-themed party spread.

Sweet, tart, colorful, and boozy, these Candy Apple Jell-O Shots are an easy way to bring one of fall’s most nostalgic treats to the party.
