Ingredients

  • 6 medium apples (peeled, cored, and diced – Honeycrisp or Gala work beautifully)
  • ½ cup homemade caramel sauce (or more if you like it extra caramel-y)
  • ½ cup apple cider (or apple juice)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prep the Apples
Peel, core, and chop your apples into small chunks for quicker cooking.
  2. Simmer the Apples
In a large heavy-bottomed pot, add the apples, apple cider, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat the apples well.
  3. Cook Until Soft
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 30–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft and break apart easily.
  4. Blend Until Smooth
Use an immersion blender right in the pot to blend the mixture until completely smooth. (Or transfer carefully to a blender in batches.)
  5. Stir in the Caramel
Once smooth, stir in your homemade caramel sauce and vanilla extract. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed by adding more caramel or sugar.
  6. Reduce and Thicken
Let the apple butter cook uncovered for another 15–20 minutes on low, stirring occasionally, until thickened to your liking. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
  7. Store
Cool completely, then store in jars. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Tips for the Best Caramel Apple Butter

  • Apples Matter – Use a mix of sweet and tart apples (like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith) for the best flavor balance.
  • Caramel Consistency – If your caramel is very thick, warm it slightly before adding to the apple butter so it stirs in smoothly.
  • Don’t Rush the Simmer – Letting the apple butter cook down low and slow will give you the deepest flavor and thickest texture.
