What Is an Icing Transfer?

The dramatic spiderweb decorations are made using royal icing transfers.

Instead of piping directly onto the cupcakes, you’ll pipe the spiderwebs onto wax paper or acetate, allow them to dry completely, then carefully stand them upright in the frosting.

Royal icing transfers are one of my favorite decorating techniques because they:

  • Can be made well ahead of time
  • Make decorating stress-free
  • Hold intricate details beautifully
  • Add height and dimension to desserts
  • Instantly make cupcakes look professional

How to Make Spiderweb Icing Transfers

These elegant spiderwebs can be made several days before decorating.

Step 1

Tape a printed spiderweb template underneath a sheet of wax paper or acetate.

Step 2

Using white royal icing, carefully pipe the center of the web first.

Then pipe each section outward, connecting the lines to create the web.

Be sure to make the icing lines thick enough to support standing upright once dry.

Step 3

Allow the spiderwebs to dry completely overnight.

Do not rush this step.

Step 4

Once hardened, gently peel each spiderweb from the wax paper.

Store in an airtight container until ready to decorate.

Tips for Perfect Halloween Cupcakes

Make the icing transfers first.
They need plenty of time to dry completely.

Use coffee in the cake batter.
It enhances the chocolate flavor without tasting like coffee.

Use stiff royal icing.
This helps the spiderwebs stay strong enough to stand upright.

Pipe tall frosting swirls.
The buttercream helps support the spiderweb decoration.

Transport carefully.
Place the decorated cupcakes in a deep cupcake carrier to protect the upright webs.

Fun Variations

Chocolate Spider Cupcakes

Add a small plastic spider or royal icing spider sitting on the web.

Black Spiderwebs

Pipe the webs with black royal icing instead of white for a bold gothic look.

Glitter Webs

Dust the dried spiderwebs lightly with edible pearl or silver luster dust for an elegant shimmer.

Haunted Forest Cupcakes

Scatter crushed chocolate sandwich cookies around the frosting to resemble dark soil before inserting the web.
