And the topping makes it even better: a big swirl of whipped cream, a fresh pineapple chunk, and a bright red maraschino cherry. It looks like a tropical cocktail but tastes like a rich, creamy cup of white hot chocolate.

This is such a fun drink when you want something completely different from traditional cocoa. Serve it for a tropical-themed party, Christmas in July, girls’ night, a holiday hot chocolate bar, or simply when you’re dreaming of somewhere warm.

Why You’ll Love This Piña Colada Hot Chocolate

Pineapple and coconut are already a classic combination, and creamy white chocolate gives those flavors an entirely new personality.

The white chocolate adds richness, coconut milk gives the drink its signature tropical flavor, and pineapple juice provides enough brightness to keep everything from becoming overly sweet.

It’s also easy to make on the stovetop in about 15 minutes.

How to Make Piña Colada White Hot Chocolate

1. Combine the Milk and Coconut Milk

Add the whole milk, coconut milk, and heavy cream to a medium saucepan.

Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is hot and steaming.

Don’t allow it to boil.

2. Melt the White Chocolate

Reduce the heat to low and add the white chocolate chips.

Whisk continuously until the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.

3. Add the Flavor

Stir in the vanilla, coconut extract, and a small pinch of salt.

The coconut extract is optional, but I love adding a little because it really brings out that classic piña colada flavor.

4. Add the Pineapple Juice

Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit for about a minute.

Slowly pour in the pineapple juice while whisking continuously.

Pineapple is acidic, so I prefer adding it after the hot chocolate has been removed from the heat. This helps prevent the dairy from separating.

Don’t return the drink to a boil after adding the pineapple juice.

5. Decorate Your Hot Chocolate

Pour the hot chocolate into mugs.

Add a generous swirl of whipped cream to each one.

Place a fresh pineapple chunk and maraschino cherry on top. You can put them directly on the whipped cream or thread them onto a small cocktail pick and place it across the top of the mug.

For even more coconut flavor, finish with a sprinkle of toasted coconut.

Jennie’s Thoughts

I wanted this to actually taste like a piña colada and not just be pineapple white hot chocolate with coconut sprinkled on top.

Using both coconut milk and pineapple juice gives you those two flavors throughout the entire drink, while the white chocolate makes everything rich and creamy.

But I think the garnish is what really sells this one. I would pile the whipped cream pretty high and put a fresh golden pineapple chunk and bright red cherry right on top. As soon as you see it, you know it’s supposed to taste like a piña colada.

I also love the idea of serving this in clear glass mugs so you can see the creamy white hot chocolate underneath all those colorful toppings.

What Does Piña Colada White Hot Chocolate Taste Like?

Think of a creamy white chocolate drink combined with the tropical flavors of a piña colada.

The pineapple adds fruity sweetness and a little tartness, while coconut gives the drink that unmistakable tropical flavor. White chocolate ties everything together with a rich vanilla-like sweetness.

It’s almost like a warm, creamy pineapple-coconut dessert in a mug.

What Kind of Coconut Milk Should I Use?

For the richest flavor, use canned coconut milk.

Shake or stir the coconut milk well before measuring it because the coconut cream can separate from the liquid while it’s sitting in the can.

I prefer full-fat coconut milk because it creates a richer hot chocolate, but light coconut milk can also be used.

Can I Use Coconut Cream?

Yes, but coconut cream is much richer than coconut milk.

If you’re using coconut cream, try replacing the 1/2 cup coconut milk with about 1/4 cup coconut cream and 1/4 cup additional whole milk.

This keeps the finished drink creamy without making it excessively thick.

Will Pineapple Juice Make the Milk Curdle?

Pineapple juice is acidic, so it can cause dairy to separate if it’s added to very hot or boiling milk.

The easiest way to avoid this is to make the white hot chocolate first, remove it from the heat, wait about a minute, and then slowly whisk in the pineapple juice.

Once the pineapple has been added, don’t boil the mixture.

Make It Extra Coconutty

If you’re a big coconut fan, there are several ways to increase the coconut flavor.

Add a small amount of coconut extract, use toasted coconut as a topping, or replace a little more of the whole milk with coconut milk.

You could even rim your mugs with white chocolate and toasted coconut for an extra-special presentation.

Make a Toasted Coconut Rim

Melt a small amount of white chocolate and spread it around the rim of your mug.

Place toasted coconut on a shallow plate and gently dip the white-chocolate-covered rim into the coconut.

Allow it to set for a few minutes before adding your hot chocolate.

This would be especially pretty if you’re serving the drink for a party.

The Perfect Piña Colada Garnish

I would keep the garnish simple because the colors are already beautiful.

Start with a tall swirl of whipped cream. Add a fresh pineapple chunk and maraschino cherry together on a cocktail pick.

Place it across the whipped cream and finish with a tiny sprinkle of toasted coconut.

You get creamy white, golden yellow, and bright cherry red all in one mug.

Can I Make This Without Heavy Cream?

Yes. Replace the heavy cream with additional whole milk.

It won’t be quite as decadent, but the coconut milk and white chocolate will still give the drink plenty of creaminess.

Is There Alcohol in This Recipe?

No. This version is inspired by the flavors of a piña colada but doesn’t require alcohol.

That makes it easy to serve as a fun tropical hot chocolate for a variety of occasions.
