Instructions

  1. Prep Your Ingredients:
    • Peel and thinly slice the potatoes and onion.
    • Measure out the garlic, broth, milk, cheeses, and seasonings for easy assembly.
    • Butter your ceramic baking dish.
  2. Build the Layers:
    • Start with a single layer of white potato slices on the bottom of the dish.
    • Add a layer of sliced onion and sprinkle on a small amount of minced garlic.
    • Dot with a few small pieces of butter (about 3-4 pieces).
    • Drizzle a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon or two of chicken broth over the layer.
    • Lightly sprinkle with garlic salt, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and seasoned pepper.
    • Sprinkle grated Parmesan, shredded Parmesan, and shredded white cheddar over the top.
  3. Repeat the Layers:
    • Create the second layer with gold potatoes and repeat the process with onion, garlic, butter, milk, broth, spices, and cheeses.
    • Continue layering, alternating between white and gold potatoes, until all ingredients are used.
    • Finish with a top layer of potatoes and a generous amount of cheese.
  4. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Bake the gratin uncovered for 30–40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and golden.
    • If the top begins to darken too quickly, cover it with foil for the remaining baking time.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let the dish cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.

Tips for Perfect Results

  • Seasoning: Sprinkle lightly as you go—each layer adds to the overall flavor.
  • Layer Variations: The layers don’t need to be identical, so don’t worry if they vary slightly. It will still taste incredible.
  • Make It Your Own: Want to mix things up? Try adding crispy bacon bits or fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary between the layers.
