Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (orange, purple, black, green)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
  2. Divide the Dough: Split the sugar cookie dough in half. Set one half aside and divide the remaining dough into four portions. Color each portion using gel food coloring: one orange, one green, one black, and one purple. Wrap each dough portion in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  3. Roll Out Dough: Roll out the white dough to about ¼ inch thickness. Using mini Halloween cookie cutters, cut out shapes at random across the surface of the dough (pumpkins, bats, cats, ghosts, and hats). Carefully remove the cutouts and set them aside.
  4. Cut and Fill Shapes: Roll out the colored doughs one at a time and use the same mini cutters to make pumpkins (orange), bats and cats (black), ghosts (purple), and hats (green). Place the corresponding colored cutouts into the empty spaces on the white dough.
  5. Cut Cookies: Once all the cutouts have been filled, use a round cookie cutter to cut circles around the decorated dough. Carefully transfer the cookies to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
